ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to assess the potential effect of heat stress on dairy cow productivity, fertility, and biochemical blood indices during the early lactation stage in a temperate climate. Additionally, the study aimed to determine the role of leptin and adiponectin in regulating the immune response accompanying lipolysis after calving in dairy cows. The study included 100 clinically healthy Polish Holstein-Friesian dairy cows selected based on parity and 305 d of milk yield from 5 commercial farms with similar herd management and housing systems. Prospective cohort data were recorded from calving day until 150 d in milk, and microclimate loggers installed inside the barns were used to record temperature and relative humidity data to calculate daily temperature-humidity index (THI) on the calving day, through +7, +14, and +21 d during early lactation. Additionally, monthly productive performance parameters such as milk yield, chemical composition, fatty acids composition, and fertility indices were analyzed. Results showed that the THI from calving day through +7, +14, and +21 d during early lactation was negatively associated with fertility parameters such as delayed first estrus postpartum and an elongated calving interval, respectively, by 29, 27, 25, and 16 d. Furthermore, an increase in THI value during early lactation was associated with an elongated artificially inseminated service period, days open, and intercalving period. Increasing THI from calving day (0 d) through +7, +14, and up to +21 d during early lactation was also linked to decreased milk yield by 3.20, 4.10, 5.60, and 5.60 kg, respectively. The study also found that heat stress during early lactation was associated with a lower body condition score in dairy cows and higher concentrations of leptin, nonesterified fatty acids, and β-hydroxybutyrate, accompanied by a drastic reduction in adipose tissue-secreted adiponectin levels after calving. Additionally, heat stress-induced lipolysis in adipose tissue caused an inflammatory response that increased biochemical blood indices associated with immune responses such as cytokines, acute phase proteins, and heat shock protein. These findings suggest that exposing dairy cows to heat stress during early lactation can negatively affect their productive performance, fertility, and biochemical blood indices in subsequent lactations. Thus, farm management changes should be implemented during early lactation to mitigate the negative consequences of heat stress occurrence.

To increase the knowledge on diversity of freshwater cyanobacteria, we have characterized a novel filamentous, benthic cyanobacterium isolated from a pond in Golestan province, Iran. The isolate was studied using a polyphasic approach based on morphological and molecular characteristics, including phylogenetic and structural analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence and 16S to 23S internal transcribed spacer (ITS), respectively. The overall morphology of the isolate was similar to Nostocalean member's strains with non-tapering filaments and distributed heterocytes. However, the molecular analyses suggested that it was more closely related to the lithobiont and rock-dwelling Goleter apudmare Miscoe & J.R.Johansen, which has tapered filaments and basal heterocytes. The 16S rRNA gene phylogenetic analysis, based on bayesian inference and maximum likelihood methods, placed the isolate close to G. apudmare. The D1-D1', Box-B and V3 helixes of the isolate's ITS sequence were different when compared to other Goleter ITS sequences. Similar to G. apudmare HA4356-MV2 (JN385288.1) and Goleter sp. CHAB TP201702 (MT488126.1), tRNA genes were absent from the amplified ITS sequence in the studied isolate. These morphological and molecular characteristics differentiate this isolate from all other Goleter taxa described so far, which contributes to extend the knowledge on cyanobacterial diversity and occurrence of benthic cyanobacteria in Iranian freshwaters. L'isolat a été étudié en utilisant une approche polyphasique basée sur les caractéristiques morphologiques et moléculaires, comprenant l'analyse phylogénétique et structurelle de la séquence du gène de l'ARNr 16S et de l'espaceur transcrit interne (ITS) 16S à 23S, respectivement. La morphologie globale de l'isolat était similaire à celle des souches membres des Nostocales avec des filaments non effilés et des hétérocytes distribués. Cependant, les analyses moléculaires suggèrent qu'il était plus étroitement lié au lithobionte et au Goleter apudmare Miscoe & J.R.Johansen vivant dans les roches, qui possède des filaments effilés et des hétérocytes basaux. L'analyse phylogénétique du gène de l'ARNr 16S, basée sur les méthodes d'inférence bayésienne et de vraisemblance maximale, a placé l'isolat à proximité de G. apudmare. Les hélices D1-D1', Box-B et V3 de la séquence ITS de l'isolat étaient différentes par rapport aux autres séquences Goleter ITS. De la même manière que G. apudmare HA4356-MV2 (JN385288.1) et Goleter sp. CHAB TP201702 (MT488126.1), les gènes d'ARNt étaient absents de la séquence ITS amplifiée dans l'isolat étudié. Ces caractéristiques morphologiques et moléculaires différencient cet isolat de tous les autres taxons de Goleter décrits jusqu'à présent, ce qui contribue à étendre les connaissances sur la diversité cyanobactérienne et la présence de cyanobactéries benthiques dans les eaux douces iraniennes. Dispersal is a crucial component of species' responses to climate warming. Warming‐induced changes in species' distributions are the outcome of how temperature affects dispersal at the individual level. Yet, there is little or no theory that considers the temperature dependence of dispersal when investigating the impacts of warming on species' distributions.Here I take a first step towards filling this key gap in our knowledge. I focus on ectotherms, species whose body temperature depends on the environmental temperature, not least because they constitute the majority of biodiversity on the planet. I develop a mathematical model of spatial population dynamics that explicitly incorporates mechanistic descriptions of ectotherm life history trait responses to temperature. A novel feature of this framework is the explicit temperature dependence of all phases of dispersal: emigration, transfer and settlement.I report three key findings. First, dispersal, regardless of whether it is random or temperature‐dependent, allows both tropical and temperate ectotherms to track warming‐induced changes in their thermal environments and to expand their distributions beyond the lower and upper thermal limits of their respective climate envelopes. In the absence of dispersal mortality, warming does not alter these new distributional limits.Second, an analysis based solely on trait response data predicts that tropical ectotherms should be able to expand their distributions polewards to a greater degree than temperate ectotherms. Analysis of the dynamical model confirms this prediction. Tropical ectotherms have an advantage when moving to cooler climates because they experience lower within‐patch and dispersal mortality, and their higher thermal optima and maximal birth rates allow them to take advantage of the warmer parts of the year. Previous theory has shown that tropical ectotherms are more successful in invading and adapting the temperate climates than vice versa. This study provides the key missing piece, by showing how temperature‐dependent dispersal could facilitate both invasion and adaptation.Third, dispersal mortality does not affect the poleward expansion of ectotherm distributions. But, it prevents both tropical and temperate ectotherms from maintaining sink populations in localities that are too warm to be viable in the absence of dispersal. Dispersal mortality also affects species' abundance patterns, causing a larger decline in abundance throughout the range when species disperse randomly rather than in response to thermal habitat suitability. Addressing soil nutrient degradation and global warming requires novel solutions. Enhanced weathering using crushed basalt rock is a promising dual-action strategy that can enhance soil health and sequester carbon dioxide. This study examines the short-term effects of basalt amendment on spring oat (Avena sativa L.) during the 2022 growing season in NE England. The experimental design consisted of four blocks with control and basalt-amended plots, and two cultivation types within each treatment, laid out in a split plot design. Basalt (18.86 tonnes ha−1) was incorporated into the soil during seeding. Tissue, grain and soil samples were collected for yield, nutrient, and pH analysis. Basalt amendment led to significantly higher yields, averaging 20.5% and 9.3% increases in direct drill and ploughed plots, respectively. Soil pH was significantly higher 256 days after rock application across cultivation types (direct drill: on average 6.47 vs. 6.76 and ploughed: on average 6.69 vs. 6.89, for control and basalt-amended plots, respectively), likely due to rapidly dissolving minerals in the applied basalt, such as calcite. Indications of growing season differences in soil pH are observed through direct measurement of lower manganese and iron uptake in plants grown on basalt-amended soil. Higher grain and tissue potassium, and tissue calcium uptake were observed in basalt-treated crops. Notably, no accumulation of potentially toxic elements (arsenic, cadmium, chromium, nickel) was detected in the grain, indicating that crops grown using this basaltic feedstock are safe for consumption. This study indicates that basalt amendments can improve agronomic performance in sandy clay-loam agricultural soil under temperate climate conditions. These findings offer valuable insights for producers in temperate regions who are considering using such amendments, demonstrating the potential for improved crop yields and environmental benefits while ensuring crop safety. Red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) is a forage legume cultivated worldwide. This plant is capable of establishing a nitrogen-fixing symbiosis with Rhizobium leguminosarum symbiovar trifolii strains. To date, no comparative analysis of the symbiotic properties and heterogeneity of T. pratense microsymbionts derived from two distinct geographic regions has been performed. In this study, the symbiotic properties of strains originating from the subpolar and temperate climate zones in a wide range of temperatures (10–25 °C) have been characterized. Our results indicate that all the studied T. pratense microsymbionts from two geographic regions were highly efficient in host plant nodulation and nitrogen fixation in a wide range of temperatures. However, some differences between the populations and between the strains within the individual population examined were observed. Based on the nodC and nifH sequences, the symbiotic diversity of the strains was estimated. In general, 13 alleles for nodC and for nifH were identified. Moreover, 21 and 61 polymorphic sites in the nodC and nifH sequences were found, respectively, indicating that the latter gene shows higher heterogeneity than the former one. Among the nodC and nifH alleles, three genotypes (I–III) were the most frequent, whereas the other alleles (IV–XIII) proved to be unique for the individual strains. Based on the nodC and nifH allele types, 20 nodC-nifH genotypes were identified. Among them, the most frequent were three genotypes marked as A (6 strains), B (5 strains), and C (3 strains). Type A was exclusively found in the temperate strains, whereas types B and C were identified in the subpolar strains. The remaining 17 genotypes were found in single strains. In conclusion, our data indicate that R. leguminosarum sv. trifolii strains derived from two climatic zones show a high diversity with respect to the symbiotic efficiency and heterogeneity. However, some of the R. leguminosarum sv. trifolii strains exhibit very good symbiotic potential in the wide range of the temperatures tested; hence, they may be used in the future for improvement of legume crop production. The article examines the development of a new discourse on habitability in the sixteenth century, which breaks with the ancient notion that distinguished between habitable and uninhabitable spaces according to their climate and location. In it, a new conception of the world as completely habitable and exploitable is articulated, and the European ideal of a temperate climate as a reference to characterize the territories and inhabitants of various latitudes is put forward. I considered more than sixty texts related to cosmography, and a hundred maps and diagrams that were published and circulated as Europe expanded around the globe in the early modern period, and that exhibit new semantics and meanings about habitability. This study, through the analysis of these specific sources, aims to contribute to the debate on the origins of the Anthropocene and the political and imaginative logic that enables its development. The author suggests that the discursive pillars that shaped modern thinking about habitability were crucial in giving life to the ideas of extractivism, speculation, and unlimited connectivity that structures the Anthropocene. • The study contributes to our understanding of how this discourse about habitability helped to structure thinking about the planet as an infinite reservoir of resources. • The modern habitability discourse serves to interpret the Anthropocene. • The American continent played a role in breaking the old discourse of habitability and introducing a new definition of it. • The discourse of habitability of early modernity proclaims the possibility of inhabiting the whole world and that all spaces can be exploitable and profitable if they are populated. • The modern habitability discourse imposes the temperate European condition as the ideal for inhabiting the Earth. Irrigation is an important component of the terrestrial water cycle, but it is often poorly accounted for in models. Recent studies have attempted to integrate satellite data and land surface models via data assimilation (DA) to (a) detect and quantify irrigation, and (b) better estimate the related land surface variables such as soil moisture, vegetation, and evapotranspiration. In this study, different synthetic DA experiments are tested to advance satellite DA for the estimation of irrigation. We assimilate synthetic Sentinel‐1 backscatter observations into the Noah‐MP model coupled with an irrigation scheme. When updating soil moisture, we found that the DA sets better initial conditions to trigger irrigation in the model. However, DA updates to wetter conditions can inhibit irrigation simulation. Building on this limitation, we propose an improved DA algorithm using a buddy check approach. The method still updates the land surface, but now the irrigation trigger is not primarily based on the evolution of soil moisture, but on an adaptive innovation (observation minus forecast) outlier detection. The new method was found to be optimal for more temperate climates where irrigation events are less frequent and characterized by higher application rates. It was found that the DA outperforms the model‐only 14‐day irrigation estimates by about 20% in terms of root‐mean‐squared differences, when frequent (daily or every other day) observations are available. With fewer observations or high levels of noise, the system strongly underestimates the irrigation amounts. The method is flexible and can be expanded to other DA systems, also real‐world cases. However, it remains poorly simulated by models and it is hard to quantify through satellite observations alone. The combination of models and satellite observations to detect and quantify irrigation has been explored in the last few years. Recently, Sentinel‐1 radar (microwave) observations have been assimilated into the Noah‐MP land surface model in order to quantify irrigation, and better estimate the related land surface variables, such as soil moisture and vegetation. This system has shown benefits but also limitations, which are highlighted and addressed in our study using synthetic experiments. We propose an improved data assimilation algorithm and test it for different sites and levels of model and observation error. For temperate regions, the new method estimates irrigation more accurately (20%) than the model alone, provided that frequent (daily or every other day) observations are available. With further developments, the new methodology could be used in a real‐world experiment. The potato tuber moth (PTM), Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), is a worldwide potato pest that thrives in warm temperate and tropical climates. The aim of this study was to evaluate the pathogenicity of indigenous isolates of three entomopathogenic fungi (EPFs) [Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill.–3, Isaria fumosorosea (Wize) Brown & Smith–1, and Lecanicillium psalliotae (Treschew) Zare & Gams–1] against eggs, younger larvae (1st and 2nd instars), and older (3rd and 4th instars) larvae of PTM under laboratory conditions. Whole isolates were applied at three different conidial suspensions of (1 × 106, 1 × 107, and 1 × 108 conidia/mL), using a spray method. Pathogenicity tests revealed that all of the isolates tested had varying degrees of pathogenicity against the pest. The highest mortalities were seen in the larvae; however, younger larvae were more susceptible than the older ones. Eggs were generally less susceptible than larvae. Two B. basiana isolates (M49 and M48) were more lethal against PTM than the others, generating 100.0% and 96.1% mortalities in older larvae, respectively, and 100.0% mortalities in younger larvae. These two isolates likewise had the strongest egg-hatching inhibitory effects, preventing egg hatching in 0–48 h old eggs by 88.6% and 80.0%, respectively, 7 days after treatment. All tested isolates were also molecularly identified. According to the results of molecular phylogenetic analyses based on the ITS region sequence, the two most pathogenic B. bassiana isolates exhibit a high similarity (99%) with other B. bassiana isolates in GenBank. Context: Heat stress is a major environmental factor negatively affecting animal health and production efficiency of the sow, and causes significant economic losses to the global pig industry. Researchers have developed various thermal indices with different characteristics for assessing the level of heat stress in pigs, including the temperature–humidity index (THI), black globe–humidity index (BGHI), effective temperature (ET), equivalent temperature index of sows (ETIS), and enthalpy (H), among others. Aims: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of heat stress on reproductive performance by using different thermal indices based on environmental variables in a temperate climate and to compare the goodness-of-fit among them. Methods: In total, 2951 sow reproductive records were analysed for a Puebla farm in the northern hemisphere. Key results: The overall means for pregnancy, farrowing, and abortion rates over the period from January to December 2020 were 83.1%, 80.67%, and 5.2%, whereas temperature, relative humidity, and air velocity were 24.3°C, 63.0%, and 3.7 m/s respectively. The highest rates of pregnancy and farrowing over the study period were observed in March, while the abortion rate was highest in December. However, the mean daily temperatures exceeded 25°C between March and June, being higher the upper limit of the thermoneutral zone for sows. Many thermal indices have been used to estimate the level of heat stress in pigs, such as the THI, BGHI, ET, and ETIS. We used 11 thermal indices to measure the degree of heat stress affecting fertility traits of animals. Pregnancy and farrowing rates were highest for THI2 and THI6 values, reflecting moderate stress at pregnancy and farrowing periods. Statistically significant differences were found between the THI2, THI4, THI6, and ET values and the pregnancy, farrowing, and abortion rates (P < 0.05). Conclusions: Our results showed that the THI2 performs better for evaluating the level of heat stress in sows than do other thermal-comfort indices such as the THI4, THI6, and ET. Implications: These results may be useful for accurate assessment of heat stress to mitigate its effects and avoid significant economic losses in sows in temperate climates. It is important for those of us responsible for animal welfare and health to improve pig production and avoid economic loss. We used data such as environmental temperature and humidity to determine the best time for a sow to get pregnant with the finest animal-welfare conditions. Spiders may be adversely affected by pesticides, yet they are not included in regulatory risk assessment and a related standard guideline to test their sensitivity to chemicals is lacking. Different laboratory setups, including test temperature and relative humidity, have been shown to influence the sensitivity of spiders. The climate from which spiders originate and the rearing conditions in the laboratory prior to ecotoxicological testing may also alter their sensitivity to chemicals, potentially in interaction with test conditions. We investigated the influence of population origin, rearing and test temperature on the chemical sensitivity of the spider Pardosa amentata towards lambda‐cyhalothrin. We collected female P. amentata carrying egg sacs from two climates, i.e., boreal and cool temperate. Spiders were kept in the laboratory and their offspring were reared and tested at 15, 20 and 25°C. Hatching of egg sacs largely failed at 15°C, while a moderate spiderling mortality (40%) was recorded at 20°C. At 25°C, mortality increased (63%) and a faster developmental rate was observed. Rearing and test temperature had no significant effects on spider chemical sensitivity. However, spider chemical sensitivity differed between populations, with spiders from boreal climate being 38% more sensitive than spiders from cool temperate climate. A higher sensitivity towards lambda‐cyhalothrin increases the risk of population reduction in treated areas, with potential alterations of ecosystem functions such as biological control. Sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae, Phlebotominae; Newstead, 1911) are widespread in Europe, being particularly common in the Mediterranean region but rare north of the Alps. Thus, Switzerland is an opportune place to investigate the sand fly fauna on both sides of the Alpine crest, in southern sub‐Mediterranean climate and northern oceanic temperate climate. We reinvestigated the Swiss sand fly fauna with the aim to assess changes in composition, altitudinal distribution, abundance and seasonality. Thirty‐eight sites were investigated with light traps and/or interception sticky traps in 4 years. Ninety and 380 specimens were caught by light traps and sticky traps, respectively, at 15 collecting sites. Four species were identified. Phlebotomus mascittii (Grassi, 1908), Phlebotomus perniciosus (Newstead, 1911) and Sergentomyia minuta (Rondani, 1843) were confirmed in Ticino, and P. mascittii for the first time in neighbouring Grisons. Also, Phlebotomus neglectus (Tonnoir, 1921) is for the first time reported, though at a very low density compared to P. perniciosus at the same site. Its presence in Ticino supports the northward spread observed in Italy. Sand flies were detected north of the Alps at one site only, endorsing a historical report. Overall, the low density of P. perniciosus and very low density of P. neglectus suggest that canine leishmaniosis may not be an important disease risk in Switzerland. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Amphibians are disproportionately represented among the many vertebrate taxa that are declining globally. Few long-term studies of amphibians exist, especially in temperate climates, hindering our understanding of long-term trends in amphibian communities, which may delay or prevent management action. Here, we develop and deploy an inexpensive monitoring method with potentially broad scientific and community uptake, ‘rapid road surveys’. We test whether this protocol is useful in understanding relative abundance in an amphibian community over a 17-year period. From 2003 to 2019, we performed thousands of rapid (5–15 min) amphibian surveys and recorded the number of on-road amphibians along a single, 267 m stretch of secondary roads in rural Canada. Assuming that on-road occurrence reflects relative amphibian population sizes, we show that amphibians have declined by approximately 73% from 2003 to 2019. The decline was driven by a remarkable 91% decrease in the abundance of northern leopard frogs (Lithobates pipiens), the species comprising the most observation records, while all other species did not show a temporal trend. We cannot attribute a definitive mechanism to the L. pipiens decline. However, by ruling out a number of putative causes, we hypothesize that it may be related to land-use change or infectious disease. Our results show that a simple, temporally replicated road survey protocol, deployed in a spatially restricted area, can be a valuable tool for conservation scientists to understand trends in abundance across an entire community. The ability to alter the mass of energetically consumptive organs in response to seasonal variation in nutritional access has been demonstrated in several species from temperate climates, but less so from other climate zones. We predicted that adult striped mice (Rhabdomys pumilio) from the Succulent Karoo semi-desert in South Africa have lower organ masses during the hot summer dry season with low food availability (n = 28) when compared to the food-rich wet season (n = 25) as a possible adaptation to reduced energy expenditure. Food availability in the wet season was more than twice than that of the dry season. Body mass was positively correlated with most organ masses considered, except for the spleen. Mandible length, as a non-plastic measure of body size, was positively correlated with the mass of heart and stomach. Relative to body mass and to mandible length, kidneys and the small intestine were heavier in the wet season than during the dry season in both sexes. Liver masses were greater in females (but smaller in males) during the wet season, possibly due to increased female reproductive investment during this season. Both sexes had relatively heavier brains (by 9.6% on average) during the wet season than during the dry season, which is the first indication of the Dehnel phenomenon in a rodent, in a subtropical climate, and in the southern hemisphere. Future studies will have to test whether this change in brain size is reversible. Having relatively smaller brains during the dry season could be a mechanism to reduce energy consumption. In conclusion, our study indicates that striped mice may save energy during the food restricted dry season by reducing energetically expensive organ masses, including brain mass. In the temperate climate of South Korea, specific corn varieties are cultivated using plug trays. The cultivation process is initiated from February to March within greenhouse facilities, maintaining a temperature below 10 degrees Celsius. Following this, in April, seedlings are transplanted to enable an exceptionally early harvest for increased profitability. However, the subsequent elevation in indoor temperatures leads to seedling overgrowth. This study explores the effectiveness of three plant growth regulators—paclobutrazol, prohexadione-calcium, and diniconazole–on super sweet corn seedlings. Significantly, the application of prohexadione-calcium at 2 ppm during the first leaf stage substantially reduces seedling height and impedes the growth of both the first and second internodes. This impact extends to leaf-related traits, manifesting reductions in the area, length, and width of the third leaf. Furthermore, prohexadione-calcium induces a significant decrease in both fresh and dried shoot weight, while simultaneously augmenting root weight. This alteration results in a noteworthy shift in the root–shoot ratio, particularly at 2 ppm. Subsequent experiments have identified the optimal concentration of prohexadione-calcium at 15 ppm, effectively mitigating overgrowth in both hybrid and inbred corn varieties. These findings provide essential insights for practitioners seeking to efficiently manage corn seedling overgrowth. This paper describes dispersed cryptospores and trilete spores from tropical, temperate and cool climate belts within Přídolí and compares them with the land plant megafossil record. The palynology of earlier intervals in the Silurian are also reviewed. A common feature of the cryptospore and trilete spore records is that their number is surprisingly lowest in the tropical climatic belt and much higher in the temperate and especially in the cool latitude, and the highest number of cryptospore taxa occurring only in one belt is found in the cool belt while the highest number of trilete spore taxa that occurred only in one belt is recorded in the temperate belt. In general, based on the dispersed spore record, we can estimate that the plant assemblages of the tropical belt were dominated by rhyniophytes; trimerophytes probably prevailed over rhyniophytes in the temperate belt, and rhyniophytes again dominated within the cool belt. Large temperature variations in a temperate climate, particularly in late winter and early spring, can be disruptive for native ecosystems and agricultural crops. As warmer temperatures occur earlier in the year in midlatitude regions as a result of anthropogenic climate change, springtime temperatures may become less consistent, leading to potential damage to species and crops that are vulnerable to the return of historically cooler temperatures, including late-spring frosts, after an initial warm-up. In this work, we quantify shifting patterns in late-winter and springtime temperature variations at eight sites across New Jersey from 1950 to 2019. Many sites located along the coast or in the coastal plain experience increases in the number of times the temperature climbs above 15.5°C (60°F) and then falls below freezing (i.e.,0°C, or 32°F). Sites in southern New Jersey (where much of the state's agriculture is located) experience the most significant (P < 0.05) increases in large springtime temperature variations. Across all sites, there is a general increase in both the percentage and magnitude of temperature variations that occur as early as February. At 75% of sites, day-to-day variation in daily maximum temperature has increased from the 1950s through 2019; day-to-day variation in daily minimum temperatures has increased over the same time at more than half of sites considered. These amplifications in extreme temperature variations indicate the need for both mitigation and adaptation strategies to protect vulnerable crops and ecosystems in the region during this critical time of the year. Significance Statement: Human-caused climate change has made it more likely for warmer temperatures to occur earlier in the year, causing many locations to experience late-winter and early-springtime temperatures that are less consistent than they may have been in the past. These variations can be highly problematic for both vital agricultural crops and critical ecosystems. Here, we evaluate how late-winter and early-springtime temperatures have changed throughout New Jersey (home to a variety of agriculture and unique ecosystems) from the mid-twentieth century until 2019. We find critical changes to temperature patterns during late winter and early spring, including larger and more frequent temperature swings (particularly in February) and increased day-to-day variation in high and low temperatures. The cosmopolitan angiosperm genus Stellaria L. (Caryophyllaceae) occurs across the Arctic and is most diverse in the high southern Asian mountains, including presence at the most extreme latitudinal and elevational limits of vascular plants. Using the primary fossil record and double digest restriction site-associated DNA sequencing data, we estimated divergence times of Stellaria and relatives across the Caryophyllaceae. We then used ancestral area and ancestral state reconstructions to interpret the biogeographical history of the group. We found that Stellaria originated in the Miocene and gave rise to repeated New World lineages, mostly from temperate Old World regions and probably via Bering Land Bridges. Circumboreal lineages were recovered of recent, Pleistocene origin and several might have originated in southerly mountains of both the Old World and the New World before subsequently colonizing the Arctic. Ancestral state reconstruction of inhabitance of cold vs. temperate climates and of wet vs. dry habitats revealed repeated evolutionary transitions across these extremes by members of the genus worldwide. Our study, which samples nearly all species within a diverse and cosmopolitan lineage of flowering plants, recovers a group characterized by niche lability and helps to support prior findings of temperate origins of many cryophilous plant lineages. With global warming, extreme weather frequently and severely appears globally. Extreme precipitation is one of the extreme weather events that can cause many natural disasters, such as floods and waterlogging. In this study, Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP) daily precipitation data were used to investigate extreme precipitation and its contribution to annual precipitation in different global climate regions and typical river basins. The climate types included equatorial climates (EC), arid climates (AC), warm temperate climates (WTC), snowy climates (SC) and polar climates (PC). R99p, Rx5day, CWD and R20 was selected as extreme precipitation indices in this study; extreme precipitation days were defined by CWD and R20. The results showed that EC and WTC had higher extreme precipitation level; SC and PC had lower extreme precipitation amounts and days than AC. R99p, Rx5day and CWD monitored higher extreme precipitation contribution degrees in AC; however, R20 monitored higher contribution degrees in EC and WTC. R99p, Rx5day and CWD showed higher extreme precipitation contribution degrees in North Africa, the Middle East, Australia and northwestern China; R20 showed higher contribution degrees in South America, the southeastern United States and South Asia. Based on historical observational data, Heilongjiang Basin (HB), Yellow River Basin (YERB), Yangtze River Basin (YARB), Ganges River Basin (GRB), Danube River Basin (DRB) and Mekong River Basin (MERB) had high-frequency extreme precipitation in summer. The research results are helpful for understanding the characteristics of extreme precipitation and provide a reference for flood control and disaster reduction in different climatic regions and main river basins. In this study, the first aim was to develop a rapid and non‐destructive method for analysing rice genotypes' tolerance to low temperatures (LT) during the seedling stage. Using a growth parameter and a physiological parameter, a discriminant formula was developed to differentiate between tolerant and sensitive genotypes based on their LT tolerance score. The study identified several benefits of the discriminant formula, including its low classification error rate, scalability, and ability to be used in controlled and reduced environments. Additionally, a second study was conducted, which found a strong correlation between the LT tolerance score during the seedling stage and plant yield at the ripening stage in plants grown under field LT during the vegetative stage. Panicle weight was the main mediator of the effect of the LT tolerance score on plant yield, but the number of panicles per plant also played a role. Overall, the results suggest that the LT tolerance score can serve as an indirect selection factor for plants for both LT tolerance and plant yield. Objectives: Brown adipose tissue (BAT) is a heat‐producing organ aiding nonshivering thermogenesis (NST) during cold stress. Due to its potential cold‐adaptive role BAT has been predominantly studied in cold and temperate climate populations, but not among warm‐climate adults. This work explores if BAT activity can be inferred in Samoans. Materials and Methods: We inferred BAT activity by comparing metabolic rate and surface heat dissipation using indirect calorimetry and thermal imaging between room temperature and cold exposure among Samoans (N = 61, females: n = 38) from 'Upolu Island, Samoa. BAT activity was inferred using ANOVA linear regression models with the variables measured at cold exposure as outcomes. T‐tests were used to compare changes in surface temperature between room temperature and cold exposure. Results: Metabolic rate significantly increased after cooling. In both the supraclavicular area, a known BAT location, and the sternum, a non‐BAT location, temperatures decreased significantly upon cold exposure. Differences in supraclavicular temperatures between room temperature and cold were significantly smaller than differences in sternum temperatures between exposures. These results suggest that BAT thermogenesis occurred in known BAT‐locations and thus contributed to NST during cooling. Conclusions: This study adds to our understanding of BAT activity across different populations and climates. Further study may illuminate whether the cold‐adaptive properties of BAT may have played a role in the successful expansion of populations across the globe, including warm‐climate groups. Background and Aims. Botrytis bunch rot (BBR) in cool temperate climates is a key constraint to the consistent supply of grapes to winery specifications. BBR severities have been correlated with specific environmental conditions; however, data-driven applications intended to support crop protection decisions are restricted in access and/or of unknown commercial value. The aims of this study were to evaluate variables providing within-vineyard awareness of BBR risk in Riesling vines. Methods and Results. Descriptors of BBR epidemics from eight site years, 2009–2014, were developed for vine areas of ∼0.5 ha within two regions of Tasmania with different climates. Two variables using the daily Bacchus index, from crop stage E-L 19 to E-L 31 or 34, accounted for >80% of the variance in the final mean BBR severity. A BBR risk index (BBR-I), incorporating the mean daily Bacchus index from E-L 19 to E-L 31 and the median daily vapour pressure deficit of air at 15 : 00 during the late-season interval, accounted for up to 99.5% of the variance in the final mean BBR severity. The late-season interval (days) or median daily RH (%) at 15:00 in the same period accounted for 86.4 or 83.3% of the variance. Spatial variability of BBR severity mapped in 4.8 ha of Sauvignon Blanc in 2018-19 confirmed the need to apply BBR risk indicators at an appropriate spatial scale. Conclusions. Environmental variables with biological relevance served as indicators of BBR risk at the study sites and have the potential to discriminate BBR risk among production regions in Tasmania. Significance of the Study. Study findings are expected to support the development of applications that raise awareness of BBR risk at an appropriate spatial scale for in-season adaption of crop protection, diagnosis of crop protection efficacy, and/or site selection decisions. The cornelian cherry is a plant that annually provides fruits, drupe-type, ranging in color from yellow through pink, red, carmine, and almost black. Cornelian cherry bears abundant fruit in temperate climate conditions, which means that its dark-colored fruits can be treated as an excellent source of anthocyanins. After consuming, anthocyanins have a protective function in the human body. Raw fruit extracts and their pure isolates, rich in anthocyanins, have a wide spectrum of health-promoting properties. This review focuses on the health-promoting properties of anthocyanins from fruits of cornelian cherry, documented in research conducted in vitro, in vivo, and in humans. The results obtained so far confirm the beneficial effects of anthocyanins on the blood parameters, whose values are important in predicting and assessing the risk and progression of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. A beneficial effect on molecular and histopathological changes in target organs such as the heart, brain, kidneys, and liver has also been demonstrated. Anthocyanins from cornelian cherry have a strong antioxidant effect, which explains their protective effects on organs and anticancer effects. Moreover, they have antiglycemic, antihyperlipidemic, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. The work highlights the perspectives and directions of necessary research. The standardization of agroforestry systems, processes and products can support and strengthen their transformational potential for implementing sustainable agriculture. However, scientific research in this area is quite limited. Therefore, our study aims to identify the key agroforestry systems in the temperate climate of Bulgaria and to reveal the leading Voluntary Sustainable Standards and Systems (VSSS) in support of their better development. To achieve the set research aim, we use a “case study” approach combined with a review of the Voluntary Sustainable Standards and Systems in Europe. Moreover, the 187 private and public Sustainability Standards and Systems covered by the ITC Standards Map for Europe to assess the degree of association between VSSS and the above types of agroforestry systems have been analyzed. The four identified VSSS groups, although directed at agricultural areas such as Agriculture, Livestock and Forestry, do not prohibit explicitly the use of agroforestry practices. Furthermore, the connection between the discovered VSSS and the studied agroforestry systems in Bulgaria is analyzed. Background: Bovine babesiosis, a global disease, has not been studied so far in Kashmir valley, which is having temperate type of climate as compared to rest of India having tropical to sub-tropical climate, so we felt the need to investigate it. Methods: To diagnose the babesiosis in clinically suspected cattle (n=450), peripheral blood film examination and PCR tests using generic and species-specific primers targeting Babesia/Theleria genera and B. bigemina, B. bovis as well as B. divergens, respectively were conducted. Four PCR products were sequenced and subjected to BLASTn analysis. Ticks were collected from the clinically suspected animals and identified as per the standard morphological keys. Results: The prevalence of babesiosis among suspected cattle in central Kashmir by peripheral blood film examination and PCR technique was 11.11% and 33.62%, respectively. The 18S rRNA gene of Isolate B1 of Babesia spp. showed 99.0 to 100% nucleotide sequence homology with 18S rRNA gene of different isolates of B. bigemina registered in the GenBank, while as 18S rRNA gene of Isolate Z showed 98.5 to 99.2% and 93.1 to 93.9% nucleotide sequence homology with 18S rRNA gene of different isolates of Babesia spp. and B. bigemina, respectively, registered in the GenBank. Rhipicephalus spp. and Haemaphysalis spp. were the two major tick genera identified in the present study. Conclusion: Bovine Babesiosis in Kashmir is attributed to B. bovis, B. bigemina and some other Babesia spp. or strains which needs further investigation. Naturalistic plantings, such as meadow‐style plantings, can improve the quality of urban green spaces through aesthetic, biodiversity and low maintenance features. Species selection for, and maintenance of naturalistic plantings are key to their success. While herbaceous and grassy meadows can be mowed, naturalistic plantings with woody plants require more intense maintenance to remove biomass and promote resprouting. We aim to understand woody plant responses to diverse disturbance regimes to potentially inform the selection and management of woody species in urban plantings. We conducted a quantitative systematic literature review of 72 papers and investigated what main external (climate, disturbance regime) and internal (buds, life stage, storage reserves) factors influence the resprouting response of woody plants. We found resprouting literature is geographically widespread for woody plants, but studies are skewed towards Temperate climates in USA and Australia, with a focus on high severity and high frequency fire disturbance. Resprouting response was mostly defined as a continuous response to disturbance dependent on disturbance regime, climate and plant traits. Maintenance and management of naturalistic woody plantings, through hard pruning techniques such as coppicing, may be informed by analogous high severity and high frequency disturbance studies. However, the literature on woody plant resprouting has several knowledge gaps for lower severity and lower frequency disturbance regimes and in more arid climates. This contribution provides the first agroeconomic account of the application of a mineral microgranular fertilizer and an organomineral microgranular fertilizer directly beneath the corn in comparison to a common mineral band fertilizer in temperate climate regions. The focus of the study is on the reduction in phosphorus inputs while maintaining the yield of maize plants (Zea mays). The study used a three-year field trial to tabulate dry matter yields using the two phosphorus-reduced microgranular fertilizers, as well as a standard diammonium phosphate (DAP) fertilization method. The application of the organomineral microgranular fertilizer resulted in dry matter yields that were 15% higher (2.8 Mg per hectare) than the DAP variant, while higher yields using the mineral microgranular fertilizer only occurred in a single year. The higher yield of the organomineral microgranular fertilizer and the lower phosphorus amounts as a result of using that product resulted in a moderate phosphorus excess of 2.7 kg P ha−1, while DAP fertilization resulted in a surplus of 25.5 kg per hectare. The phosphorus balance on the plots fertilized with the mineral microgranular fertilizer followed a pattern similar to that of the organomineral microgranular fertilizer. We conclude that both microgranular fertilizers, applied directly beneath the corn, provide an adequate alternative to widespread DAP fertilization as a fertilizer band in maize cultivation on fertile soils. Tropical regions contain ecologically and socio‐economically important habitats, and are home to about 3.8 billion people, many of which directly depend on tropical coastal waters for their well‐being. At the basis of these ecosystems are biogeochemical processes. Climate change is expected to have a greater impact in the tropics compared to temperate regions because of the relatively stable environmental conditions found there. However, it was surprising to find only 660 research articles published focusing on the impact of climate change on the biogeochemistry of coastal tropical waters compared to 4823 for temperate waters. In this perspective, we highlight important topics in need of further research. Specifically, we suggest that in tropical regions compared to temperate counterparts climate change stressors will be experienced differently, that organisms have a lower acclimation capacity, and that long‐term baseline biogeochemical datasets useful for quantifying future changes are lacking. The low number of research papers on the impacts of climate change in coastal tropical regions is likely due to a mix of reasons including limited resources for research and limited number of long time series in many developing tropical countries. Unpredictable rainfall frequently results in excess moisture, which is detrimental to the landscape because it interferes with the genetic, morphological, and physiological processes of plants, even though the majority of urban landscapes frequently experience moisture shortages. A study was conducted to analyze the effects of a 36-day waterlogging phase and a subsequent 12-day recovery period on the morpho-physiological responses of 17 Crassulaceae species with the goal of identifying those which were more tolerant of the conditions. Results revealed that waterlogging stress has an impact on all morpho-physiological parameters. Sensitive materials (S7, Hylotelephium telephium 'Purple Emperor' and S15, S. sexangulare) showed severe ornamental quality damage, mortality, decreases in total dry biomass, root-shoot ratio, and chlorophyll content, as well as higher MDA concentrations. Lower reductions in these parameters, along with improved antioxidant enzyme activities and greater recovery capabilities after drainage, were observed in the most tolerant materials S2 (H. spectabile 'Brilliant'), S3 (H. spectabile 'Carl'), and S5 (H. telephium 'Autumn Joy'). Furthermore, with the exception of early death materials (S7 and S15), all materials showed varying intensities of adventitious root formation in response to waterlogging. The 17 species were divided into 4 clusters based on the comprehensive evaluation value. The first group included S1-S3, S5-S6, S8-S12, which were waterlogged tolerant with the highest values (0.63–0.82). S14 belongs to the intermediate waterlogging tolerant. S4, S13, S16, and S17 were clustered into the low waterlogging-tolerant group. S7 and S15 were the most susceptible to waterlogging. The survival and success of Crassulaceae species (especially, the first and second cluster), throughout this prolonged period of waterlogging (36 days) and recovery were attributed to a combination of physiological and morphological responses, indicating that they are an appealing species for the creation of rain gardens or obstructed drainage locations. Biochar is promoted as a means of improving soil fertility. Yet, few experiments have investigated its potential to improve nitrogen (N) use efficiency for high‐yielding maize production in the U.S. Midwest. We tested the hypothesis that biochar application increases inorganic soil N availability during maize growth, leading to higher grain yields and N recovery efficiency while reducing the risk of N leaching following harvest. Four N fertilizer rates (0, 90, 179, and 269 kg ha−1 as urea ammonium nitrate [UAN] solution) were applied with or without biochar (10 Mg ha−1) before planting in a two‐year field study. Inorganic soil N concentration was measured during the growing season (0–15 cm), and deep soil cores were obtained following harvest (0–90 cm). Results show that biochar did not affect maize yield, crop N uptake, or N recovery efficiency (by the difference method) across N rates, and there was no biochar by N rate interaction. While biochar lowered soil inorganic N concentrations on several sampling dates, this did not translate into seasonal differences in cumulative soil N availability, although grain yields in the unfertilized control were ~10% lower with biochar, suggesting net N immobilization. Biochar partially reduced the risk of N leaching following harvest by decreasing soil N concentrations at 30–60 cm, but mean concentrations for 0–90 cm were not different. Compared to previous work highlighting the benefits of biochar in arid climates with low soil fertility, we found no evidence of increased crop yield, NRE, or reduced risk of N leaching on Mollisols in a temperate climate. Pro-environmental diversification of pasture-based livestock farms in European regions characterized by oceanic/maritime temperate climates is urgently needed to mitigate climate change, protect biodiversity, and ensure sustainable food production. To date, little is known about pro-environmental actions implemented by farmers based in these regions, their knowledge and beliefs about the practices they use as well as challenges encountered. The current study uses narrative interviewing approach employed predominantly within the social sciences to elicit and understand life experiences associated with farmers' implementation of pro-environmental diversification. 15 Irish, 7 British, and 7 French farmers engaged in pro-environmental diversification were interviewed using a narrative approach. A qualitative, thematic analysis of the interview data found that, in most cases, farmers' pursuit of pro-environmental diversification was associated with alternative farming systems such as organic agriculture, regenerative agriculture, agroforestry, and permaculture. Primary challengesexperienced by farmers implementing pro-environmental diversification were: a lack of clear regulation; information, and formal training in pro-environmental farming; along with labor requirements. The results of this study help to better understand farmers' motivations in undertaking pro-environmental diversification and their perception of these actions, which can hinder the development of effective strategies and interventions to promote sustainable agriculture practices. Simple Summary: Heat stress in dairy cattle is well-studied under warm climates but less is known in a temperate climate such as in Sweden. This study explores the impact of heat stress on high-yielding dairy cows during the summer, with a particular focus on the climate in Scandinavia. When cows are in a state of negative energy balance during early lactation, they become more susceptible to the adverse effects of heat stress, and this can affect their milk production. The temperature humidity index (THI) is used to assess the degree of heat stress, with a THI of 72 considered the minimum borderline for when heat stress becomes a problem. As THI increases, daily milk yield decreases, showing a clear link between heat stress and reduced milk production, and providing shade proved in this study to be effective in countering the adverse effects of heat stress, especially for cows in early lactation. Those with shade access experienced smaller declines in milk production compared to those without it. In summary, this research underscored the importance of shade provision especially for early-lactation dairy cows during the summer to maintain high milk production and mitigate the adverse effects of heat stress. Heat stress in dairy cows can cause an increase in body temperature and respiration rate, and a decreased feed intake leading to reduced production. Dairy cows are better at handling heat when they have access to shade. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the effects of providing shade to high-yielding dairy cattle during the summer in the Swedish climate. Twenty high-yielding Swedish Red dairy cows, held on pasture, were divided into two groups, one with access to shade (S) and one without (NS). Milk production was recorded daily and shade temperature and relative humidity were recorded at 10 min intervals at pasture. A major effect of heat stress was found in cows in early lactation in the NS group. In this group, a high mean temperature two days before and a high THI two days before affected the milk production negatively (p < 0.001), which was the same for the maximum temperature and maximum THI measured on the same day (p < 0.001). Increases in the mean temperature and THI two days before also affected milk production negatively (p < 0.05) for cows in early lactation in the S group, though to a lesser extent. Building conditions, outdoor climate, and human behavior influence residential concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM2.5). To study PM2.5 spatiotemporal variability in residences, we acquired paired indoor and outdoor PM2.5 measurements at 3,977 residences across the United States totaling >10,000 monitor-years of time-resolved data (10-min resolution) from the PurpleAir network. Time-series analysis and statistical modeling apportioned residential PM2.5 concentrations to outdoor sources (median residential contribution = 52% of total, coefficient of variation = 69%), episodic indoor emission events such as cooking (28%, CV = 210%) and persistent indoor sources (20%, CV = 112%). Residences in the temperate marine climate zone experienced higher infiltration factors, consistent with expectations for more time with open windows in milder climates. Likewise, for all climate zones, infiltration factors were highest in summer and lowest in winter, decreasing by approximately half in most climate zones. Large outdoor-indoor temperature differences were associated with lower infiltration factors, suggesting particle losses from active filtration occurred during heating and cooling. Absolute contributions from both outdoor and indoor sources increased during wildfire events. Infiltration factors decreased during periods of high outdoor PM2.5, such as during wildfires, reducing potential exposures from outdoor-origin particles but increasing potential exposures to indoor-origin particles. Time-of-day analysis reveals that episodic emission events are most frequent during mealtimes as well as on holidays (Thanksgiving and Christmas), indicating that cooking-related activities are a strong episodic emission source of indoor PM2.5 in monitored residences. The multifaceted effects of climate change on physical and biogeochemical processes are rapidly altering marine ecosystems but often are considered in isolation, leaving our understanding of interactions between these drivers of ecosystem change relatively poor. This is particularly true for shallow coastal ecosystems, which are fuelled by a combination of distinct pelagic and benthic energy pathways that may respond to climate change in fundamentally distinct ways. The fish production supported by these systems is likely to be impacted by climate change differently to those of offshore and shelf ecosystems, which have relatively simpler food webs and mostly lack benthic primary production sources. We developed a novel, multispecies size spectrum model for shallow coastal reefs, specifically designed to simulate potential interactive outcomes of changing benthic and pelagic energy inputs and temperatures and calculate the relative importance of these variables for the fish community. Our model, calibrated using field data from an extensive temperate reef monitoring program, predicts that changes in resource levels will have much stronger impacts on fish biomass and yields than changes driven by physiological responses to temperature. Under increased plankton abundance, species in all fish trophic groups were predicted to increase in biomass, average size, and yields. By contrast, changes in benthic resources produced variable responses across fish trophic groups. Increased benthic resources led to increasing benthivorous and piscivorous fish biomasses, yields, and mean body sizes, but biomass decreases among herbivore and planktivore species. When resource changes were combined with warming seas, physiological responses generally decreased species' biomass and yields. Our results suggest that understanding changes in benthic production and its implications for coastal fisheries should be a priority research area. Our modified size spectrum model provides a framework for further study of benthic and pelagic energy pathways that can be easily adapted to other ecosystems. The apple tree is the most common fruit crop in the temperate climate zone. Modern intensive fruit cultivation involves the use of new, highly productive cultivars and cultivation technologies, thanks to the creation of small crown shapes with an increased number of trees per hectare. Reducing planting patterns and creating more dense plantation systems can significantly improve their yields. However, the limiting factor that can reduce tree productivity and deteriorate fruit quality is the degree of crown illumination. Ensuring even access of sunlight to all parts of the crown is the main task in the formation and pruning trees. The study aimed to determine the effect of crown pruning at BBCH 0 (winter) and BBCH 74 (early summer) and various types of crown formation on the growth activity and productivity of 'Fuji' and 'Honeycrisp' apple trees. A significant decrease (20%) in the number of newly formed shoots in the form of the French axis crown compared to the ballerina and slender spindle crowns was found. However, their length and total growth were significantly higher. The formation of the ballerina crown (with the removal of overgrown wood in the 25 cm zone on the central conductor above the lower tier of semi-cross-branched branches) contributed to a decrease in shoot length and total growth. The introduction of crown pruning in the summer also improved crown illumination – shoot length decreased by 17% and total growth by 12%. Specific productivity per bole cross-section and total shoot length was the highest in ballerina crown trees, followed by trees with a slender spindle crown, and trees pruned in winter and summer. 1. Root respiration is essential for nutrient acquisition. The respiration rate of absorptive roots theoretically relates to the economics of carbon‐nutrient exchange, but its empirical role remains largely unexplored in the trait space defining nutrient uptake strategies. 2. Here, we measured the respiration rates of the distal, non‐woody, absorptive roots of 252 woody and herbaceous species from subtropical and temperate climate zones, including both arbuscular mycorrhizal and ectomycorrhizal fungal hosts. 3. We found a consistent and positive correlation between root respiration rate and specific root length (root length per dry weight), irrespective of growth form, mycorrhizal type and climate zone. Root respiration rate was also positively, but less strongly and less frequently correlated with root nitrogen concentration. Root morphology strongly explained the fast‐slow gradient of root respiration in the root economics space. 4. By quantifying the ratio of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal DNA copy number and root tissue DNA copy number using qPCR, we found that the morphology‐driven gradient did not explain the full variation in fungal collaboration; thick roots were consistently well colonised, but medium and thin roots displayed a wide range of colonisation intensity. 5. Synthesis: These results advance our understanding of the fundamental trait relationships that underpin the root economics space. Biological processes can be disrupted by global climate warming, causing phenological mismatching and mistiming. On Hokkaido Island (Japan), which has a cool temperate climate, warmer and shorter winters affect plant flowering phenology. Rapid changes in flowering phenology suggest that shorter winters will result in earlier flowering. Flowering phenology patterns were recorded for nine years (2013–2021), and nine species were selected for analysis. I analyzed climate variables that affect plant flowering phenology, including annual changes in aerial temperature, snow depth, and snowmelt timing. The results indicated that winters are getting shorter and that the accumulated degree hours of aerial temperature have not significantly changed over nine years for these plant species except one species. Plant responses to these changes differed between species, with the first flowering day occurring earlier (1.5–1.8 days per year) for two species, although that of the other seven not. If climate warming continues, it will have diverse, complex, and unpredictable effects on various individual organisms and biological relationships among species. Lack of successful biological control of alligatorweed, Alternanthera philoxeroides (Mart.) Griseb. (Amaranthaceae), by Agasicles hygrophila Selman & Vogt (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) in the USA is an emerging problem as A. philoxeroides expands into temperate climates due to poor cold tolerance of the beetles. Sourcing climatically suited biotypes of biological control agents is traditionally done through foreign exploration into their native range; however, surveying introduced populations may provide a cost‐effective and regulatory‐friendly alternative. To compare foreign biotypes to those established in the USA, two populations of A. hygrophila were collected from the coolest extent of their range in South America, and two populations were collected from stable populations in the southeastern USA. For comparing cold tolerance among introduced populations, eight populations were collected from across a climatic gradient. For all populations, cold tolerance was measured as a function of supercooling point, critical thermal minimum (CTmin), chill coma, and temperature‐dependent survival and development of eggs and larvae. Results of cold‐tolerance measures for North American populations were subjected to principal component analysis (PCA) to reduce dimensionality and detect trends in cold tolerance among populations. For foreign and locally collected A. hygrophila, South American populations were significantly more cold tolerant as measured by CTmin (Δ1.98 °C), chill coma (Δ1.95 °C), larval survival (Δ35.0%), and development time of eggs (24.7% faster) and larvae (17.4% faster) at 15 °C. Comparisons among North American populations found significant differences in cold tolerance across populations; however, results were less consistent than those observed for foreign populations. The first principal component (PC) explained 43.0% of variation in cold‐tolerance metrics and was strongly related to mean temperature of the coldest quarter. The use of a multivariate approach to evaluate and compare cold‐tolerance phenotypes provides strong evidence of local adaptation in introduced populations of A. hygrophila. The climate has an impact on the urban thermal environment, and the magnitude of the surface urban heat island (SUHI) and urban cool island (UCI) vary across the world's climatic zones. This literature review investigated: 1) the variations in the SUHI and UCI intensity under different climatic backgrounds, and 2) the effect of vegetation types, landscape composition, urban configuration, and water bodies on the SUHI. The SUHI had a higher intensity in tropical (Af (tropical rainy climate, Köppen climate classification), Am (tropical monsoon climate), subtropical (Cfa, subtropical humid climate), and humid continental (Dwa, semi-humid and semi-arid monsoon climate)) climate zones. The magnitude of the UCI was low compared to the SUHI across the climate zones. The cool and dry Mediterranean (Cfb, temperate marine climate; Csb, temperate mediterranean climate; Cfa) and tropical climate (Af) areas had a higher cooling intensity. For cities with a desert climate (BWh, tropical desert climate), a reverse pattern was found. The difference in the SUHI in the night-time was greater than in the daytime for most cities across the climate zones. The extent of green space cooling was related to city size, the adjacent impervious surface, and the local climate. Additionally, the composition of urban landscape elements was more significant than their configuration for sustaining the urban thermal environment. The petroleum industry is often faced with accidental spills and discharges that pollute valuable natural resources such as soil. The purpose of this study was to assess bioremediation potential of an on-site landfarming unit (LU), a highly economical solution that complies with the zero-waste policy, for bioremediation of the contaminated soil after an actual diesel fuel leakage in a fuel depot. The first aim was to evaluate the effects of different climates on hydrocarbon bioremediation. For this reason, a part of the contaminated soil was moved from the initial location with a sub-Mediterranean climate to an LU at another location with a temperate continental climate. Our results demonstrated that remediation in sub-Mediterranean climate is less effective than the remediation in a temperate continental climate. The second aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different plant species on the microbial population during bioremediation. For that purpose, 365-day monitoring of phospholipid fatty acids (PLFA) was performed. Our results support the hypothesis that plant-assisted bioremediation can diminish toxic effects of diesel-polluted soil and that the changes in plant species during bioremediation cause changes in the microbial population. The main objective of this study was to implement a landfarming bioremediation technique after an actual diesel fuel pollution in the sub-Mediterranean climate and diminish toxic effects of pollutants in soil. Since soil bioremediation is performed by soil microorganisms, their communities are primarily affected by the growing vegetation and climatic conditions. For future bioremediation strategies or ex situ approaches, it is crucial to assess the influence of a specific climate on the degradation rate of hydrocarbons in soil and select the most efficient plant species for this purpose. Evidence is mounting that migration in ectotherms is more widespread than formerly believed. Thus, a number of insects living in temperate climates, including locusts, butterflies, moths and dragonflies, following seasonal migration strategies show high responsiveness to alterations in climatic processes, similar to a broad taxonomic range of birds. On global scales, migratory insects include iconic large butterflies, dragonflies and also a number of crop pests. However, insect migrations are ecologically distinct from those of vertebrates, often relying heavily on seasonal winds and multiple generations to complete a full annual cycle, due to short insect life spans.Here, we review publicly available online resources to identify key patterns of spatial, taxonomic scales and complexity of climatic responsiveness to environmental predictors in migratory insects.We found that migratory insects respond to various levels of complexity in climatic patterns, and these responses are predicted by life history and ecological traits: (i) responses to climatic effect type were predicted by climate zone(s) of the distribution area, whereas (ii) response to climatic complexity was predicted by body size. In conclusion, migratory insects respond to various levels of complexity in climatic processes, and this responsiveness is governed by a substantially wider array of environmental predictors than demonstrated in vertebrates. The present study investigates the ecology and distribution of ostracod species and assemblages from 62 inland waterbodies in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa and tests the influence of two major climatic zones (Arid steppe climate BS and Warm temperate humid climate Cf) and two primary catchments (Kowie and Great Fish Rivers), as well as broad gradients of altitude and several local environmental factors. Distance-based linear models were used to test these species-environment relationships and indicated that eight variables (water temperature, pH, conductivity, waterbody size, habitat type, altitude, hydrological-drainage, climate) individually showed significant correlations with the response ostracod dataset of 35 species. However, owing to substantial collinearity, the most parsimonious model identified only two predicting variables (climatic zone and water pH) which best explained variation in ostracod assemblage composition. The assemblages of the two climatic zones differed significantly, with Plesiocypridopsis newtoni and Sarscypridopsis ochracea being most commonly found in the BS climates, while Sarscypridopsis trigonella and Physocypria capensis occurred most frequently in the Cf climates. Finally, tolerance ranges to water pH and electrical conductivity for 21 ostracod species are provided to facilitate application of ostracods in further biodiversity and water-quality assessments, as well as in palaeo-environmental reconstructions. Featured Application: Artificial Neural Networks have confirmed applications in predicting PV system energetic efficiency. Solar energy is a promising and efficient source of electricity in countries with stable and high sunshine duration. However, in less favorable conditions, for example in continental, temperate climates, the process requires optimization to be cost-effective. This cannot be done without the support of appropriate mathematical and numerical methods. This work presents a procedure for the construction and optimization of an artificial neural network (ANN), along with an example of its practical application under the conditions mentioned above. In the study, data gathered from a photovoltaic system in 457 consecutive days were utilized. The data includes measurements of generated power, as well as meteorological records. The cascade-forward ANN was trained with a resilient backpropagation procedure and sum squared error as a performance function. The final ANN has two hidden layers with nine and six nodes. This resulted in a relative error of 10.78% and R2 of 0.92–0.97 depending on the data sample. The case study was used to present an example of the potential application of the tool. Temperate fruit and nut crops require distinctive cold and warm seasons to meet their physiological requirements and progress through their phenological stages. Consequently, they have been traditionally cultivated in warm temperate climate regions characterized by dry-summer and wet-winter seasons. However, fruit and nut production in these areas faces new challenging conditions due to increasingly severe and erratic weather patterns caused by climate change. This review represents an effort towards identifying the current state of knowledge, key challenges, and gaps that emerge from studies of climate change effects on fruit and nut crops produced in warm temperate climates. Following the PRISMA methodology for systematic reviews, we analyzed 403 articles published between 2000 and 2023 that met the defined eligibility criteria. A 44-fold increase in the number of publications during the last two decades reflects a growing interest in research related to both a better understanding of the effects of climate anomalies on temperate fruit and nut production and the need to find strategies that allow this industry to adapt to current and future weather conditions while reducing its environmental impacts. In an extended analysis beyond the scope of the systematic review methodology, we classified the literature into six main areas of research, including responses to environmental conditions, water management, sustainable agriculture, breeding and genetics, prediction models, and production systems. Given the rapid expansion of climate change-related literature, our analysis provides valuable information for researchers, as it can help them identify aspects that are well understood, topics that remain unexplored, and urgent questions that need to be addressed in the future. Selecting appropriate native plant species to ensure the resilience of plant communities and ecosystem services on extensive green roofs is a challenge. Plant functional strategy models provide a useful framework for identifying plant characteristics that promote plant success on green roofs, and for generalizing results obtained with a limited number of species to a global flora. We analysed the dynamics of floristic composition and CSR strategies of seeded plant communities on experimental extensive green roofs under different stress conditions (substrate depths and fertilization treatments) at early establishment (4 years). Floristic composition evolved strongly over four years, with a significant reduction in species richness and equitability due to the increasing dominance of the stress-tolerant Sedum album. CSR strategies shifted from initial communities co-dominated by C and R strategies to communities largely dominated by S strategy four years later. Changes in plant communities strategy were modulated by substrate depth, with a higher increase in S strategy under more stressful conditions. At the installation of vegetation, the dominant factor discriminating CSR composition was fertilization supply. Substrate depth emerged as the primary factor determining CSR strategy after four years of plant community establishment. Our study supports the pattern that stress-tolerant species tend to rapidly dominate plant communities on extensive green roofs and suggests that native species selection for implementing analogous habitat on extensive green roofs, in a temperate climate, should primarily focus on natural habitats composed of stress-tolerant species. Among environmental controls, solar shading and ventilative cooling are widely considered as key passive strategies for limiting the overheating risks in buildings. While their application is encouraged through Energy Performance of Buildings Directive regulations, several studies have shown that summer thermal comfort in heating-dominate temperate climates still requires deeper investigation, particularly in low-energy residential buildings. Based on qualitative and quantitative data collected through surveys and monitoring in 147 highly insulated houses in Wallonia (Belgium), this paper gives an overview of the implemented passive strategies and discusses their effectiveness. Statistical tests are conducted to evaluate their impact on both perceived and measured indoor conditions. In general, the results highlight a limited impact of the implemented strategies, questioning their proper operation. Operational modes for environmental controls thus appear crucial, and should better respond to occupants' needs, preferences and control opportunities. At a more general level, the study calls for a better understanding of the barriers inhibiting successful integration and operation of environmental controls, in order to effectively reduce overheating risks in residential buildings and limit future diffusion of active cooling systems with their induced environmental impacts. Carbonate speleothems contain measurable concentration of 210Pb, which can be used to estimate modern growth rates up to a 150-years timescale. However, data referring to such application of this geochronological method are scarce in the Southern Hemisphere, with most studies based on temperate climate locations in the Asian continent. Such a lack of data makes it difficult to approach an investigative comparison of the main physical parameters that influence the precipitation rate of calcium carbonate in caves. In this context, the present study describes the record of longitudinal growth rates of carbonate speleothems sampled in two different Brazilian regions: Pains municipality (Midwestern Minas Gerais State) and Curitiba Metropolitan Area (CMA, eastern Paraná State), whose climates are subtropical with dry winter (Cwa) and wet temperate (Cfb), respectively. Segments of variable thickness from eight stalactites samples were subjected to HCl dissolution, 210Po deposition onto copper discs, and 210Po analysis by alpha spectrometry for yielding the activity concentration data. 210Po activity concentration data provided the 210Pb values due to radioactive equilibrium condition between these radionuclides. Although all samples exhibited a quantifiable measure of the 210Pb activity concentration in their sectional layers, the longitudinal growth rate could not be estimated by the CF:CS method for three of the eight stalactites. However, the modified CRS method allowed determine growth rates for all speleothems. The mean 210Pb CRS growth rate obtained at Pains and CMA sites is 1.4 ± 0.1 mm/year and 1.5 ± 0.2 mm/year, respectively, indicating coincidence at both sites and suggesting that the approach is reliable for determining modern growth rates. Root water uptake depends on soil moisture which is primarily fed by throughfall in forests. Several biotic and abiotic elements shape the spatial distribution of throughfall. It is well documented that throughfall patterns result in reoccurring higher and lower water inputs at certain locations. However, how the spatial distribution of throughfall affects root water uptake patterns remains unresolved. Therefore, we investigate root water uptake patterns by considering spatial patterns of throughfall and soil water in addition to soil and neighboring tree characteristics. In a beech-dominated mixed deciduous forest in a temperate climate, we conducted intensive throughfall sampling at locations paired with soil moisture sensors during the 2019 growing season. We employed a linear mixed-effects model to understand controlling factors in root water uptake patterns. Our results show that soil water patterns and interactions among neighboring trees are the most significant factors regulating root water uptake patterns. Temporally stable throughfall patterns did not influence root water uptake patterns. Similarly, soil properties were unimportant for spatial patterns of root water uptake. We found that wetter locations (rarely associated with throughfall hotspots) promoted greater root water uptake. Root water uptake in monitored soil layers also increased with neighborhood species richness. Ultimately our findings suggest that complementarity mechanisms within the forest stand, in addition to soil water variability and availability, govern root water uptake patterns. Indoor radon source potential from unground soil was monitored using prototype devices approaching a dwelling with a cellar basement at 1 depth from the soil-atmosphere interface. Therefore, the radon concentrations in soil gas were monitored at 1 m depth. Integrated radon measurements were performed, and the results correlated with meteorological parameters. The influence of the difference in outdoor and device-soil temperature was considered, and the infiltration rate was calculated. The effect of the soil temperature gradient on the soil radon entry rate was evaluated. The indoor radon entry rate due to the soil gas was 7.0 ± 2.7 Bq m−3 h−1. The radon entry rate was 5.0 ± 0.8 Bq m−3 h−1 due to diffusion. In contrast, the advection-drive flow of soil gas is ranged up to ± 4.0 Bq m−3 h−1. So, the infiltration rate of the model dwelling was 0.7 (± 0.5) × 10−1 h−1 if only the stack effect occurred. The radon levels in tap water were measured, and the radon entry rate was estimated at 1.3 ± 0.7 Bq m−3 h−1. If the ventilation rate is low or seismic faulting appears, the soil radon entry is increased by one order of magnitude. The soil radon appeared like the building materials, having 1/3 of the total indoor radon entry, while outdoor air was slightly lower (28%), with tap water at 5%. The resident's mortality risk occurred at < 2.5% for typical dwellings in temperate climate areas founded on sand-gravel underground. The risk rises to 34% with an extremely low ventilation rate between indoors and outdoors or high radon entry from the soil due to seismic faulting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Thermomechanical processes caused by short-and long-term temperature fluctuations are a prevalent weathering mechanism on exposed rock walls. While many authors have explored the potential for thermomechanical weathering in alpine and polar regions, few have examined the effects of seasonality on weathering in temperate climates. This is pertinent as seasonal climatic conditions may influence both short-term temperature oscillations which produce incipient fractures and diurnal-to annual-scale cycles which propagate pre-existing fractures via thermal fatigue. In this study, three rock outcrops located along the Niagara Escarpment in Hamilton, Canada were monitored to examine changes in the thermal regime at the rock surface and within pre-existing fractures over a 1-year period. Temperature was sampled in 1-min intervals, providing data at a fine temporal resolution. Our unique dataset demonstrates that the rock surface and fracture experience minute-scale temperature oscillations which magnify over time. Longer-term temperature cycles during theyearare superimposed upon minute-and diurnal-scale fluctuations which likely augment weathering potential. This produces considerable thermal stress over the year which we estimate to be on the order of 18 GPa at the rock surface and 8 GPa in fractures. We also observed diurnal reversals of the temperature gradient between the rock surface and fracture which may further amplify crack propagation. Seasonality and site-specific characteristics interact to modify different components of the rockwall thermal regime. Vegetation shading has seasonal and diurnal-scale impacts on the temperature gradient between the surface and fracture, and the amplitude of daily warming and cooling cycles. Aspect has a stronger influence on minute-scale temperature oscillations. Estimates of diurnal thermal stress indicate that the thermomechanical weathering potential is seasonally variable, but highest in the spring.
